Berlin Fashion Week Embraces Sustainability

Berlin Fashion Week (BFW) is taking a big step towards sustainability. This June, it was announced that BFW will introduce the Sustainability Requirements created by Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) starting February 2026.

Copenhagen Fashion Week’s Requirements

In January 2023, Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) introduced a set of requirements for brands and designers wanting to participate in the event. These sustainability requirements are a key part of CPHFW’s strategy to promote positive change in the fashion industry. The framework covers six main areas: strategic direction, design, smart material choices, working conditions, consumer engagement, and showcase.

To participate in CPHFW, brands and designers must meet a minimum standard that includes 19 action points. Additionally, there are several optional action points for further sustainability efforts.

While BFW implements the sustainability requirements created by CPHFW, some adjustments will be made to better reflect Berlin’s values. More details about the exact requirements will be shared at a later date. However, BFW has stated they will focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and transparency. This means giving more opportunities to underrepresented groups in the fashion industry and encouraging brands to be open about their production processes.

A New Fashion Partnership

To implement these sustainability standards, BFW and CPHFW have formed a partnership. This joint effort aims to speed up sustainability actions in the fashion industry across Germany and the Nordic countries. The Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs supports this initiative with €180,000 until 2025.

Michael Biel, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, said, By implementing the Sustainability Requirements, Berlin will become one of the leading international locations for a responsible and innovative fashion industry. With the financial support of 180,000 euros until 2025, we are once again investing in Berlin’s future as a pioneer in sustainability. Through sustainable practices such as upcycling and the use of recycled materials, social and ecological responsibility go hand in hand with fashion Made in Berlin and Germany. With these standards, Berlin will set an example in comparison with other global fashion metropolises.

What’s Next?

Select brands will test the sustainability standards starting in September before they become mandatory in 2026. While Fashion Council Germany will not provide financial support to brands, it will offer guidance and educational tools to help them meet the new requirements.

By working together, Berlin and Copenhagen Fashion Weeks aim to make the fashion industry more sustainable and responsible, setting a new standard for fashion events worldwide.
