2023 Highlights in Fashion

With one day left until 2024, it is time to look back at some of the iconic fashion moments in 2023.

The Barbie Movie

The highly anticipated Barbie movie featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling took center stage during the summer of 2023, making a significant impact on the fashion scene before it was even released. When Margot Robbie’s image emerged in a striking pink cowboy ensemble, online searches for pink outfits skyrocketed by 416%. #Barbiecore dominated social media for weeks, and theaters saw a continuous wave of pink.

Adding to the pervasive influence of pink was Margot Robbie’s press tour. Each outfit she showcased on the red carpet and during interviews was a replica of iconic Barbie outfits from various eras, creating one of the most memorable and iconic promotional campaigns for a film I’ve ever witnessed.

Schiaparelli’s Faux Animal Heads

In January, Schiaparelli, led by creative director Daniel Roseberry, captivated the internet with their haute couture fashion show. The runway showcased a fusion of fashion and artistry, featuring models and celebrities adorned in dresses with faux animal heads.

Supermodels Naomi Campbell, Irina Shayk, and Shalom Harlow graced the runway with looks embellished with the artificial heads of a wolf, snow leopard, and lion, respectively. Interestingly, Kylie Jenner also wore the dress with the lion’s head as an attendee at the fashion show.

As often, the internet was once again divided over this presentation. Some were amazed by the artistic creation, while others were of the opinion that the faux heads were glorifying the use of animal products – an ethical concern in an industry already criticized for its inhumane treatment of animals.

Irrespective of the diverse viewpoints, there’s no denying that this show stirred a profound reaction, earning it a well-deserved place on the list of impactful fashion moments.

Beyoncé Tour Fashion

Throughout the year, the globally renowned artist Beyoncé embarked on a world tour for her latest album, “Renaissance”. The concerts became widely popular across the internet, particularly when Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, graced the stage for performances of “My Power” and “Black Parade.”

Yet, beyond the captivating performances, another integral facet of the tour demanded attention – Beyoncé’s amazing costumes. Dressed in many extraordinary outfits curated from renowned brands such as Loewe, Diesel, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Alexander McQueen, Beyoncé unveiled a new, show-stopping outfit for each concert.

Among the standout choices, my personal favorite was the bee costume, complete with a headpiece from Mugler.

Taylor Swift’s Tour Fashion

In 2023, Taylor Swift opened her Eras Tour in Glendale, United States, and will continue this tour until December 2024. The tour features a set of 44 songs and is divided into 10 acts that all represent different “eras” of her career.

What sets this tour apart is not just the melodic storytelling but also the visual representation Taylor brings to each act through custom-made garments by various designers. Among the highlights are the captivating Versace costumes for the “Lovers” set, a fearless dress crafted by Roberto Cavalli, and the ethereal Zuhair Murad gown for the “Speak Now” segment. A unifying thread through all her outfits is the abundant use of sparkles, a detail we also see back in the fan’s attire for the show.

For her footwear, she sticks with one designer – She exclusively wears shoes from the iconic brand Christian Louboutin.

Maggie Smith for Loewe

Loewe is a high fashion brand led by creative director Jonathan Anderson. Earlier this year, the brand shared its new Spring/Summer 2024 collection on social media. The brand’s muse is none other than Maggie Smith, also known as Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter.

The 88-year-old actress shines in the new campaign while she holds the brand’s bag on her lap. This campaign is absolutely iconic and cannot be missed on this list.

Jacquemus’ Marketing Campaign

Established in 2009 by fashion designer Simon Porte, Jacquemus has evolved into a high-fashion powerhouse renowned for its iconic fashion shows featuring supermodels like Gigi Hadid and Imaan Hammam. Among its standout creations, the Chiquito handbag, distinguished by an oversized handle, has become a signature product.

While Jacquemus has consistently excelled in PR and marketing, this year witnessed a strategic shift as the brand embraced CGI for its campaigns. Moving away from the conventional methods, the brand skillfully crafted visuals that portrayed its latest designs seemingly racing through the streets of Paris and leisurely basking on the beach.

This inventive strategy, utilizing CGI to depict dynamic scenarios, has resonated across the fashion landscape. The approach is both unique and impactful, effectively capturing attention and dominating social media platforms.
